Your name says it all

Many of you have worked long and hard to find just the right name for your business, only to skip by one of your most important names – the name of your web site.

The tag that lists your business name is called the title tag. The title tag serves much the same purpose as your business card. You have limited space, but a lot to say. For those that have had their site created by a web developer, this individual placed this tag in the most important position on your site – at the top. This is the name that appears on the blue bar at the very top of your browser window.

There are two things you need to understand about this tag. Being the first code on your site, it is the first thing that a search engine sees and lists for you about your page. It also sets the tone for the rest of the page. This title should also be part of the content of the page, again, to show the search engines that this is what your site is all about.

The title tag for tatstore.com is “Temporary Airbrush Tattoos | Airbrush Tanning Equipment | Body Art Airbrush Tattoo Stencils” There should be no doubt what our site is all about. This phrases or “keywords” as they have come to be know, give the search engines and your customers an accurate picture of what you do.

For those of you focused on getting more local customers, you need to make sure that the first phrase in your title tag is the name of your business and the location that you serve. As an example, “Flash Body Art Western Michigan” can be used for a tat artist in my area. Your customers will be most interested in finding tat artists in their area, so it is important to tell the search engines where you are.

Next, you may want to describe your services, focusing on what will bring you the most business, like “events” or “party”. You do not need to explain clearly what you do in your title tag. That is meant for you to explain in the body text of your site. A list of your services will come to the attention of the search engines and and get you on the right pages when your customers search.

The name of your site needs to say it all so spend time to make sure is says what you need.
