Getting a Website (Part 3)
This week we are focusing on the more advanced website options. This does not necessarily mean you have to be an experienced website creator. It just means you will have the most control over how your website looks and what it can do.
Paid Domain and Hosting
This option is for the more advanced
users. From personal experience, I will again recommend GoDaddy.com for both of these services. Even if you choose to use one of the options from my previous posts, I suggest buying a domain (e.g. yoursite.com) and have it redirect to wherever your site actually is. This allows you to provide an easy to remember URL to customers. GoDaddy domains cost $8.99 a year and are only $1.99 when purchased with any non-domain service, such as hosting.
In order to create your own, custom website with your domain, you need hosting. Hosting is the spot where your website is saved so others can view it. You will have options when purchasing hosting, I suggest choosing the most basic plan. It should be plenty of space and bandwidth for your site. Once you buy a hosting plan, you have complete control over your site with infinite customization. The issue with this is that you start from scratch. This option is for those who have knowledge of HTML and CSS programming, FTP transfer, and are willing to learn other technical items that might arise, such as creating a database, installing a blog or forum, and many others. Another benefit of this option, however, is that you receive custom email addresses, such as email@yoursite.com with a hosting plan. From here, you can install a template or software program that someone else has made and edit it to your needs. There are extensive webdesign tutorials and guides online if you need help. Also, if you know a tech-savvy teenager who is looking to make some extra money, they may be willing to help you for a much lower price with this for a reasonable salary.
Professional Site Creation
This option is widely available, but very expensive. The idea is you meet with a company or individual who will listen to your needs and create you a custom site. They will take care of the design and function, and teach you how to use it when it’s ready. When having a professional create your site for you, you can plan on spending a minimum of $500 and easily up to $5000 or more, depending on the complexity of the site. Doing a search for “website design company” or something similar will bring up a list of companies who provide this service. You probably also will be able to get a recommendation if you ask around. I wouldn’t choose this option unless your website is an unrivaled priority, however. The combination of a domain and a free, hosted site may prove to be a more economical alternative, while allowing the same amount of customization.
In Conclusion
There are many options available; I hope you can find one that suits your needs. As always, leave any questions in the comments. Good Luck!
