Download Helper

So, I know that it’s true that we do a lot of reviews of firefox, and firefox related add-ons here at the TatStore Blog, but I personally just can’t help it.  If you have something you would like to do, firefox has a way to do it.

Today, I’d like to take a look at the DownloadHelper extension from firefox.  Now I’ll be the first one to point out that you aren’t going to use this extension every day, but when you need it it’ll be there to help you out.  This handy little tool exposes linked-to media in an accessible way for easy download.  That is links to pictures, links to music, and even links to movies.  Yes even the web-standard .flv.

This will allow you to download videos and pictures from basically any site on the internet.  If you can watch it, downloading it is just one simple click away, with download helper.

Let me leave you with two examples of how I have recently used DownloadHelper.  Case #1 - one of our customers, Al Moffat, was trying to put a video on his googlesite, from a news/travel channel that had featured his business in a recent episode.  Now, they freely provided the embed code to this video, and encouraged anyone to share it however they chose.  However, googlesites only support embedding youtube or google video objects (their proprietary brands).  So, with the help of DownloadHelper, I was able to download the video, convert it, and uplaod it to youtube so that he could share his video.  Case #2 - I recently had a customer from Las Vegas, who is still sadly stuck with dial-up.  For anyone who remembers struggling with dial-up, you know that watching internet media can be a chore.  Accessing the site, pressing play, and then going to eat lunch and hoping that the video is loaded glitch-free when you return.  Well, I suggested that he use DownloadHelper to download the file in a very low risk way, and then watched at his convenience.
