3D Body Art
I think there is an entire segment of teenage girls that go ga ga for anything that sparkles. Not to mention how much little girls are attracted to glitz. For this reason I think that offering the 3-D glitter tattoos can be valuable to your business.
I have always liked the looks of the glitter tattoos and when I did offer them, they were popular. The down side for me is that they take longer to apply, can be messy and don’t always turn out like I want them to.
I spoke with one of our customers, Airbrush Gypsy, who is having success offering the 3-D glitter tattoos. She said she charges a straight $5 per glitter tattoo. We both agree the designs included in the kits are not the best designs for applying the glitter tattoos. The designs that work best are larger, simpler designs.
You can use your mylar stencils to apply the glitter tats. I have put together a package of 23 designs that I think would work well for the glitter tats. These are available in reusable mylar or one time use, adhesive.
Here are a few more helpful tips… Read the package directions before you begin to apply the glitter tats. Choose a stencil design that is not too intricate. A simple design works best. When you apply the glue, paint it on as evenly as possible. When the glue turns transparent, apply the glitter. Airbrush Gypsy said she uses her airbrush to expedite the drying process. She advises you not to hold the airbrush gun too close to the glue to keep it from spreading. I use the smaller brush, included in the kit, to apply the glitter. I use the brush more like a shovel than a brush to scoop the glitter out of the jar, and drop the glitter on the top of the glue. I wait about 10 seconds and press the glitter against the skin with my thumb. Now, with the larger brush contained in the kit, brush the excess glitter off the design. Airbrush Gypsy uses a piece of wide tape, half of the tape is taped to the customer’s arm and the other half is folded up to catch the excess glitter. She also uses a soft bristle tooth brush to clean the excess glitter off the customer. Another tip from Airbrush Gypsy is to spray liquid bandage adhesive over the top of the glitter. She said this will help the glitter tattoo last longer.
I would apply the glitter tattoos at a private party or a festival where I didn’t have long lines, unless I had helpers. As I said before, they do take a little longer to apply. Also remember wind could be a factor in deciding weather to apply the glitter tattoos at an outdoor event.
I have used the 3-D glitter tattoo kits and given them as gifts. The glue and the glitter do go a long way. The amount of glue and glitter contained in one kit will do a lot more than 10 tattoos. Since most of you already have the 3-D glitter tattoos why not try to use them to help market your business. This is a great addition for birthday parties.
Remember when you first started applying airbrush tattoos? If you were like me, you needed to practice before your designs started to look good. The same is true for the glitter tattoos. Practice applying the glitter tattoos a using your mylar stencil designs. Learn what works and gain some experience applying them. Then offer them to your customers. They will love having the glitter alternative and you will capture new customers.
Here are some pictures from Airbrush Gypsy of her display which is made out of foam core board. You could also make it from coroplast.

I spoke with Airbrush Gypsy and she wanted me to add that she recommends using the adhesive stencils for applying the 3-D glitter tattoos. The glue is harder to clean off of the mylar stencils. If you are doing these at a show and have a helper, you would be able to use the mylar stencils. Otherwise, use the adhesive stencils for the glitter tattoos.
Airbrush Gypsy said she applies the glitter while the stencil is still on the customers arm. I apply the glitter after removing the stencil.
