A Press Release Primer

I have been following a conversation on the forum regarding press releases. I have not done any here as we have been focusing on our web site, but a press release can be a valuable way of reaching your audience.

Here is a link to a booklet I have used in the past called New Rules of PR that is a great overview of how to do a press release.

So what do you talk about? Here are some ideas:

Creative solutions to old problems – how to jazz up your kid’s next birthday party
Adding a video or new pictures to your site
Holiday themed tie-ins
Client success stories
“Trendy” story tie-ins (I will tell you more about that next week)
Announcing participation in fund raisers or social events

One major point of a press release is to have a conversation with the customer while the press is listening in. In other words, you need to write for the end market and not necessarily to get the attention of the press. The press already knows how to pick a good story. Focus on the customer.

  • That is great information Mark. I tried my hand at this a while back and just kinda got lost in it all. Another problem I experienced was finding relevant, consistent topics to write about. I am pretty good to go once I have a good topic.
