CES: The Future of Netbooks

This week has brought the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have been following the coverage fairly closely and two main categories of electronics, netbooks and home theatres, have been given amazing and futuristic improvements. Back in October, I wrote about the Asus Eee PC, an ultra portable laptop (now commonly called a netbook). In this post, I listed the benefits of a netbook and why many are now considering these lightweight alternatives. The two companies that are showing the greatest strides are Sony and the pioneers of netbooks themselves, Asus.
Sony Vaio P
This tiny netbook with a resolution of 1600×768 and a 2.08:1 aspect ratio is changing the idea about what a netbook should look like. You can read more about it over at Gizmodo.
ASUS Eee PC T91 and T101H
These new Eee PCs feature a swivel screen with full tablet functionality. They are touchscreen netbooks with the amazing Atom processors from Intel. You can read more about these and see more pics at Engadget.
A Final Surprise
Everyone hates new storage formats. I would be happy if SD stayed a standard for years to come. However, with a theoretical capacity of 2 TB, I’m sure many are willing to change their mind. SDXC was announced at CES this week. The new memory cards use Microsoft’s exFAT file system and will theoretically be able to reach the 2 TB mark. Panasonic is hoping to release a 64 GB card as soon as possible. Not to be outdone, SanDisk and Sony have also announced that their extended capacity Memory Stick PRO and Memory Stick Micro will soon be able to reach that same limit. You can read more about the new cards here, here and here.

There are quite a few laptop manufacturers that also recognize the need for higher RAM which is why there are some which offer upgrade worthy versions where you can increase the RAM to about 2 GB also. This is not only possible but also becoming increasingly common in the world of mini laptops.
