Barbara Ericson has been doing tats for less than a year, but she already has a good handle on the industry and its quirks. Ericson came across airbrush tattoos with her youngest son at the state fair. She did some research when she got home, and found the forum. The rest, as they say, is history. She ordered a kit and created Tats All Folks in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Of course, the ink doesn’t always flow properly, and the money doesn’t always come in immediately. Ericson tried to work a booth at her local flea market, but after many ordeals with the equipment, she had to leave the market. However, she followed a fantastic piece of advice we have heard before on this blog: “Never ever give up….but especially when you get discouraged.” She moved past the discouragement, worked out the kinks in the equipment, and now she can book events without fear.

Now that Ericson has Tats All Folks are up and running, she is doing shows and tats. Her favorite design is the Dolphins and Hibiscus, which she finishes with a crystal. She says, “I think finishing a nice design off with a crystal gives a polished, dressed up feel.” July 4, 2009 was her favorite show so far. Not only did she have some great earnings, but “the whole atmosphere was great and the happy people just made me forget that I didn’t stop once to go to the ladies room!”

Her final piece of advice is this: “People will always voice their thoughts and opinions, but I tune out the ones who discourage me. It took me this long to finally realize that no matter what it is, no matter how nutty or against the odds your idea seems to anyone, if this is your passion then go all the way with it, and it WILL pay you back. I just wish I learned about this much earlier on in life, but oh well. Things always happen for a reason even though we don’t always know what the reason is.”

To learn more about Ericson and Tats All Folks, visit her website at www.lastride.org.

Last post, I discussed the value to using content to get your name in front of more people for more keywords. Today, I want you to take that one step further and show you the remarkable results you can achieve to help your company.

One great way to spread your message across the Internet is commenting on forums and blogs. Every time you make a comment, you provide a link back to your own website. The search engines will crawl back to you, listing the original web site as a link (always valuable).

To enhance your public relations, commenting has another great benefit. When customer investigate you company, they can enter your company into a Google search to find all about you. I entered Family Airbrush Tattoos for my search and found 305,000 relevant links. The best part is that the first page entries are from other reputable companies that have a mention of this company. Imagine the confidence you will generate for a customer after they see that!

If you are looking for a more intense understanding of this topic, <a href="http://holisticsearch.co.uk/2009/03/21/why-seo-is-an-important-facet-of-online-public-relations/>click on this link to an article on the subject.

Recently, TAT changed their phone service to a faster Internet company. With that came changes of our IP address. So what is that?

When you type in a name into the address bar of your browser, such as http://www.tatstore.com, your computer connects with what is called a registrar, an Internet address book, that tells your computer what other computer has the information you are looking for. What your are typing in is called a URL, or Uniform Resources Locater. So, you type in your URL and your computer calls up the registrar to find your information.

What happens at the registrar is that the words your type in are changed over into the IP address, as set of four different number combinations that represent the exact location of the computer with the information you want. For instance, the IP address for tatstore is 216.109.194.56 (this information is public for all websites, so no secrets revealed). The first serious of digits represent the owner of the major line, such as AT&T, MCI, or other large telecommunications company. The second and third set of digits futher define a geographical location of sub lines with in a state and county locations. The final set are specific to locations with in the telecommunication’s network making the final identification of the computer you want.

So what is the big deal?

The big deal is a potential security risk for Your computer. The communications network assigns an IP address to ALL computer connected to the Internet. And that includes yours/

Currently, my IP address 69.218.252.13. So theorectially, you could type that information into your browser and connect to my home computer. So why am I telling you this? In my home computer is my financial software, which contains all my bank account and credit information. But is it safe?

Firstly, my Internet service provider offers a lot of protection, with virus and firewalls (specially coded hardware) that blocks most malicious attacks. Second, all the computers in my house are protected with various virus and firewall programs. Third, I insist that all the users on the computers use a password to log into their computer. There is little chance your can guess their user name and password. Fourth. all the most importan programs have separate user names and passwords.

The final safety measure we have in my home is that our IP address is dynamic. Dynamic means that everytime my network logs into the Internet, it changes address. You could type in the address, but it will not be my address anymore. Check with your Internet provider and see if your address is dynamic.

If you have any other questions about your home computer safety, leave me a comment and I will help you out.

This week has brought the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have been following the coverage fairly closely and two main categories of electronics, netbooks and home theatres, have been given amazing and futuristic improvements. Back in October, I wrote about the Asus Eee PC, an ultra portable laptop (now commonly called a netbook). In this post, I listed the benefits of a netbook and why many are now considering these lightweight alternatives. The two companies that are showing the greatest strides are Sony and the pioneers of netbooks themselves, Asus.

Sony Vaio P

This tiny netbook with a resolution of 1600×768 and a 2.08:1 aspect ratio is changing the idea about what a netbook should look like. You can read more about it over at Gizmodo.

ASUS Eee PC T91 and T101H

These new Eee PCs feature a swivel screen with full tablet functionality. They are touchscreen netbooks with the amazing Atom processors from Intel. You can read more about these and see more pics at Engadget.

A Final Surprise

Everyone hates new storage formats. I would be happy if SD stayed a standard for years to come. However, with a theoretical capacity of 2 TB, I’m sure many are willing to change their mind. SDXC was announced at CES this week. The new memory cards use Microsoft’s exFAT file system and will theoretically be able to reach the 2 TB mark. Panasonic is hoping to release a 64 GB card as soon as possible. Not to be outdone, SanDisk and Sony have also announced that their extended capacity Memory Stick PRO and Memory Stick Micro will soon be able to reach that same limit. You can read more about the new cards here, here and here.

You may have noticed that from time to time I make a quick statement, then provide a link to another blog or article with more information on the subject. Well, I do it for two reasons. First is, you guessed it, time. I do not always have the time to research a subject and make a blog relevant to our audience. Second is a link building strategy. If enough people follow the link to the other blog, that blogger will see a serge in traffic from this blog. They may then be inclined to make a comment or link back to use at some relevant point. We both benefit. This blog linked here is one that I read regularly to keep up on the market. It would be a good place to start with link building because it is very relevant to our store and forum, plus this blog belongs to our customer, so I have helped him get a better quality score with the search engines by giving him a link. Give it a try!

Today is Election day for the new President of the United States. I stood in line today for the first time at my polling location, so high was the voter turn out. Young and old, first time voters and veteran voters. I watched as an elderly couple left the polling, hand in hand, speaking a foreign language. Both were obviously proud to live in a new country that asked them to participate in government. Behind me was a grandmother coaching her grand daughter, a first time voter, understand the issues on the ballot.

It was a good morning.
